Butterfly Perch
Caesioperca lepidoptera
The butterfly perch (Caesioperca lepidoptera) is a marine fish in the family Anthiadidae found in temperate waters of Australia and New Zealand. Adults reach up to 47 cm with a laterally compressed, deep body displaying pinkish coloration, blue margins on the fins, a blue band behind the eye, and a distinctive large black spot toward the posterior end. This species inhabits rocky reefs, outcrops, and drop-offs at depths of 4-100 meters. Butterfly perch are schooling planktivores that form aggregations above high-profile reef structures, feeding on zooplankton in the water column. They are one of the most commonly encountered schooling fish on temperate Australian reefs and can form impressive aggregations. Their attractive pink coloration and schooling behavior make them a highlight of many temperate diving experiences in southern Australia.
