New Zealand Demoiselle

Chromis dispila

The New Zealand Demoiselle is a small reef fish found in the temperate waters of the Southwest Pacific, particularly around New Zealand and Kermadec Island. Divers can typically spot this species in marine environments ranging from 0 to 60 meters deep, although they are most commonly found between 10 and 18 meters. These fish have a short and deep body shape, which helps them navigate their pelagic-neritic habitats effectively. In terms of diet, the New Zealand Demoiselle primarily feeds on plankton, with a strong preference for copepods. They often form small feeding groups of 10 to 20 individuals in calm coastal waters. However, in deeper or more turbulent waters, they can aggregate in much larger groups of up to 500. Reproduction involves distinct pair bonding, with males taking on the responsibility of guarding and aerating the eggs. The eggs are demersal, adhering to the substrate until they hatch. The species is currently listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.
