Hydra Rock

Otago, South Island

Every surface is contested by encrusting sponges, compound ascidians, and hydroids, creating a mosaic of colour against the grey-green rock. A solitary reef structure rising from the sandy bottom off the eastern Otago Peninsula. Eagle ray and sea perch shelter beneath overhangs while Hector's dolphin sweep through on the current.
