Bird Islet
North Atoll, Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park, Sulu Sea, Philippines
A dramatic wall dive off Bird Islet — the seabird sanctuary on Tubbataha's North Atoll. The reef breaks at 5–8 m and drops through fissures and crevices past 60 m, hung with huge gorgonians, barrel sponges and soft coral. It's a big-animal site: nurse, leopard, blacktip, whitetip and grey reef sharks, eagle and lagoon rays, and manta rays that are often around, with snappers, surgeonfish, groupers, Moorish idols and jacks over the reef. Currents are changeable and can run hard; liveaboard only; advanced. Best March–June.
