A reef corner on Tubbataha North Atoll where opposing tidal currents collide near the northeastern tip of the atoll, churning the water into the swirling vortex that earns the site its name. Guides time the dive for slacker water where possible, but conditions stay unpredictable, so it suits divers comfortable in strong, shifting current. Once clear of the turbulent zone the drift settles and opens onto lively reefscapes. The nutrient-rich flow pulls in baitfish and plankton and the predators that follow. Common sightings include schooling jacks, snapper and barracuda, eagle rays, grey and whitetip reef sharks, and occasionally hammerheads. Liveaboard only; Advanced certification and drift experience required.
