Black Rock South
South Atoll, Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park, Sulu Sea, Philippines
A South Atoll wall-and-plateau dive prized for big-animal encounters rather than coral. Divers follow the steep wall and wait on the sharks — whitetip and nurse sharks resting under table corals, grey reef sharks in the current — while large Napoleon wrasse cruise the edge and manta rays make occasional appearances. Schools of surgeonfish, rainbow runners and sweetlips work the reef, with spiny lobster and macro in the cracks. Strong, changeable currents; liveaboard only; advanced.
