Below the kelp zone, the reef steps down in ledges covered with orange and yellow sponges, colonial ascidians, and patches of jewel anemones. Rock lobster occupy crevices along the ledge systems. Blue cod guard patches of reef, leatherjacket scour the hard surfaces, and short-tail stingray cruise overhead.
