Karitane Point
Otago, South Island
Deeper sections reveal walls of orange and yellow sponges interspersed with colonial ascidians. The underwater reef runs parallel to the headland, descending from shallow kelp beds at three metres to sponge-covered rock at eighteen metres. Scarlet wrasse and Jason mirabilis nudibranch inhabit the reef structure, with eleven-armed sea star patrolling deeper water.
